Me: tell me one thing you did today at school that was interesting.
Eliza: I drew pictures at nap time.
Phoebe: I threw the sun and moon out of the sky.
Five is a fun age. Mainly because it’s not four. My daughters’ vocabularies are taking off, and along with that, I am getting a wider glimpse into how their weird little minds work.
As I was dropping Phoebe off at school today, I overheard her narrating her morning to her teacher. We had a two-hour snow delay, and she and her sister spent it out in the yard making a snowman. In that, they rolled giant balls of sticky wet snow and begged me for carrots for the noses, but then couldn’t get the carrots to stay in the snowman’s face, so just ate the carrots instead.
They are also highly invested in this recurring game they play called Hot Lava. I feel like this is a standard childhood game, but when I see it in practice, I wonder where they came up with it, since these two have never seen a volcano in their lives.
They’ll spend hours laying blankets and pillows down around the house so they don’t have to step in the molten mess, or jumping from one piece of furniture to the next if it’s a really bad day for hot lava. Last night, they made their way from the downstairs living room to the upstairs bath without touching the floor once. It wasn’t a quick process, but it was thorough.
Some days, they encourage me not to burn my poor feet on the hot lava as well. I have to explain that mama’s feet are very tough and that if they’re so worried about me, perhaps they could get dressed a little faster in the morning. Blank stares.
That’s all I’ve got for this week. Speaking of molten mush, my brain is on its way there after 12 straight days of a sinus infection. I can barely string a sentence together at this point, and need to reserve my cutting wit for pieces about data storage and digital transformation.

What I’m eating:
Lots of things, but I can’t taste any of them.
What I’m listening to:
One of my favorite under-the-radar artists, Frazey Ford, is putting out a new album, and I just preordered it.
What I’m reading:
The Case Against Grammar Scolds — When it comes to a living language, live and let live a little bit.
I am a big fan of facts, and the facts are that vaccines do not cause autism. So find another way to hate being told what to do.
In novel news, just finished Americanah by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie (so good). And started Lacuna by Barbara Kingsolver. Love books by women authors—especially women of and writing about other cultures and places.
What I’m working on:
An ebook about diversity in the wellness events space, customer stories about companies innovating with cloud content management, and some fun short-form content for the HRers.
OMG Love FF and the Tanyas! Will get on that too. Thanks for the hot tip.
