You’ve probably already noticed that I have a compulsive crafting disorder: CCD.
It’s kind of like OCD but instead of washing my hands a lot I stay up really late making things like homemade cold cream and bespoke herbal tea and elderchic sachets. I am lobbying to get it in the next DSM edition, but in the meantime, it’s my main outlet these days.
Luckily for me, I have a lot of creative, nerdy friends who also think the ultimate Friday night involves some dried herbs, muslin and tiny little stamps from Japantown. Lately I’ve been on a competitive crafting streak with some of my friends that we jokingly call craft wars. It goes like this:
Anna: I couldn’t sleep last night so I sewed myself new curtains.
Me: What a coincidence, I was up late making almond milk from scratch!
Anna: Did I mention I’m starting a side business hand-sewing high-end decorative pillows?
Me: Hang on a sec, I’m ordering parfait glasses off Amazon Prime.
Last night, with my friends Jamie and Leslie, we concocted coco-rose whip.
(Thanks to Fresh-picked Beauty for this recipe!)
I love coconut oil as a moisturizer, and this one also contains jojoba, which I literally buy by the gallon from the Jojoba Company. I could cite all sorts of scientific reasons why coconut oil and jojoba are superior moisturizers, but the bottom line is that they really work. Ninety percent of the skin moisturizers I make contain at least one of these ingredients — and this one contains both.
The recipe is very simple: you combine coconut oil, jojoba, cornstarch and rose essential oil and use a hand mixer to blend it into a froth. (We left out the alkanet infused oil since I have no idea what the hell that is and it seemed to be only for color, anyway.) The whipping process took about ten minutes, nine of which we spent cynically refusing to believe it was going to work. Then it did. It was pretty exciting. And the eensy little bottle of rose essential oil that cost $40 at Good Earth was totally worth it. This stuff smells so good and feels great on your hands. Highly recommend!
I WANT the recipe as I think you have the best skin Jos!
Thanks Amy! It’s basically coconut oil, jojoba oil, rose essential oil and a little bit of cornstarch for texture. You can click on the link above for the actual recipe. And yep, I use it on my face!
can I ask you….. did you start to whip the mixture whilst still on the stowe, i tried and nothing happened; i let it cool and then I used an electric whip and nothing!
how did you do it?
Hi Arianna! I took it off the stove before whipping it. I will say that it took essentially forever to whip it. And up until the moment it thickened up, it really didn’t see like anything was happening. It was sort of a laborious task! My only other suggestion is to follow the recipe I linked to above and use their exact proportions.
