My friends and I have craft night a few Fridays a month. We make all sorts of things. Some recent projects have included making homemade bitters, French macarons, homemade rosemary soap, and coco-rose lip balm. Last Friday, we made Thieves Blend, inspired by a newsletter from The Old School—a must-subscribe if you are at all into D.I.Y. stuff or homesteading. (Thank you, Andrea.)
What is Thieves Blend? Here’s the story I’ve heard:
During the Dark Ages, bands of kleptos doused themselves in thieves blend—a concoction of five essential oils (rosemary, cinnamon, eucalyptus, lemon, clove) before pillaging the houses of the dead. Because they rarely got sick, the product of their witchcraft was revered as a miracle for warding off sickness and disease. In modern times, hippies (see description #2 here) use it to prevent sickness when around germy things. It’s great as a hand sanitizer, a room deodorizer, a car freshener, or even as a perfume for those days when the malaise prevents showering.
I posted a pic of the thieves blend on my Facebook page and have since received inquiries into whether I will sell it. The answer, sadly, is no, because I didn’t make enough and I have already given it all away. Besides, I loathe the idea of shilling product on principle because it would require me to get dressed and leave the house before 6pm.
But I am happy to point you in the direction of the recipe I used from The Old School: RECIPE
By the way, I get most of my jars from Specialty Bottle in Seattle. I’ve done quite a bit of research into bottles and they are the best. They sell a wide range of bottles (including the one-ounce spritzers we used, above) and they will sell even small amounts of bottles without a huge markup. I usually get any bottles I order within a few days.
