Sometimes, as a freelance writer and editor, it seems as though I work in the trenches all day, every day, and rarely see the results of my work. Especially in the tech world, where things move so quickly, I send my finished draft off into the void with little fanfare and small hope of ever seeing the finished product.
But other times, things circle back just when I least expect them to. So it goes this week. These are a few projects I’ve worked on this year that I’m so excited to see born into the world.
The Field Guide to Pregnancy
by Caylie See, LAc
I first met Caylie when I visited her acupuncture clinic over ten years ago on the recommendation of a friend. Since then, our relationship has been through many iterations to get to the deep mama kinship we now have going. Back when we were “just friends,” Caylie and I happened to be working on this, her first published book, when we simultaneously discovered we were both pregnant! Now, we have toddlers who are two months apart in age, and Caylie’s “other child,” this book, was just finally released on North Atlantic Books.
It’s a different kind of pregnancy guide with lots of Eastern and Western research, remedies and recipes. This project is special to me not just because of the close-to-my-heart subject matter, and the fantastic writing (hers, not mine), but because it’s the first book I’ve ever worked on that was published by an actual, for-real publisher. I tend to work with indie authors who self-publish most of the time.
The Ghost of Communism
by Lou Lesko
Lou is a photographer and the founder of BlinkBid (cloud-based creative bidding software). This is a creative project of his that I recently edited—a true story told in words and pictures. It’s got everything a story needs—International travel! Communists! A cute Russian girlfriend! You can read the whole thing online, and it’s enthralling.
I am actually in the latter stages of two other book projects right now, so ready for a new one to land on my plate. If you have a book you want an outside eye on, drop me a line!
