The Books I Loved the Most in 2023

December 26th, 2023

I read most of 42 books this year, a year in which I apparently was going to bed later and later, because that’s the only time I ever find to read.Ask me my favorite book, and it’s usually the last one I read. However, these are in no particular order, just out of over forty books, perhaps my favorite ten. All novels, mostly somewhat dark, all brilliant.

At least three about the opioid crisis. Several set within historical eras that feel personal to me, including the Cape Cod of my childhood. One told partly from the point of view of an octopus. An alternative experience of motherhood. An independent woman who refuses to be what everyone wants her to be. Actually, that last description applies to at least half the books below. I guess I have a favorite theme.

1. Demon Copperhead by Barbara Kingsolver

2. The Vaster Wilds by Lauren Groff

3. Paper Palace by Miranda Cowley Heller

4. Damnation Spring by Ash Davidson

5. Remarkably Bright Creatures by Shelby Van Pelt

6. Ohio by Stephen Markley

7. I Love You But I’ve Chosen Darkness by Claire Vaye Watkins

8. Lapvona by Ottessa Moshfegh

9. Joan Is Okay by Weike Wang

10. Lungfish by Meghan Gilliss
