The 8 Books That Moved Me Most This Year

January 1st, 2023

Out of the 27 I read, these are the 8 books I most feel the urge to recommend and even proselytize. Four were novels; three memoirs; one imaginative non-fiction. All were written by women (although I did read books by men this year, I promise; they just were not my absolute favorites). At least two were recommended by my book-lover friend Lynda, and I thank Bianca and Karen for turning me on to Maggie O’Farrell. Bianca, for introducing me to Lauren Groff, I owe you big!

1. My Year of Rest & Relaxation by Ottessa Moshfegh

2. Matrix by Lauren Groff

3. The Marriage Portrait by Maggie O’Farrell

4. Fates & Furies by Lauren Groff

5. The Sound of a Wild Snail Eating by Elisabeth Tova Bailey

6. I Am, I Am, I Am by Maggie O’Farrell

7. The Invisible Kingdom by Meghan O’Rourke

8. Braiding Sweetgrass by Robin Wall Kimmerer
